Cleaning the Main Air Ducts
06/25/2014 Back To BlogHomeowners everywhere know exactly how much effort it can take to perform air duct maintenance. The effort alone it takes to clean the vents can leave anyone wishing that they were doing something else. However, proper HVAC maintenance isn’t limited to cleaning the shallow areas of the ducts using a vacuum cleaner. Nor is it limited to home air filter cleaning using a fine brush to make sure that all of the grime is completely cleaned away. The real meat and bones of home air duct cleaning actually has to do with accessing and properly cleaning the main ducts – which is twice the effort it takes to do normal maintenance.
However, is it really worth the trouble to clean the main ducts? It is perfectly understandable not to, as it is often difficult enough to deal with air duct sanitizing. Unfortunately, there are some definite benefits to accessing the main ducts in order to clean the ventilation system. The biggest reason speaks for itself.
The main duct is where all the dirt really collects.
Indeed, the area that is so hard to reach just had to be the one area where most of the dust and grime actually collect. It is the area where the pests sometimes go, such as bugs or rats. This is the area where some of the worst bacteria can collect and give anyone with a bad allergy a run for their money. If this area is not cleaned, chances are the ventilation system will eventually fail.
When it all boils down to it, the longevity of the duct system depends on the main ducts as well as the air filter. Fortunately, the latter is easy to clean and the former takes a very long time to collect dirt. This gives you more than enough time to make the decision for yourself.
